United Nations Security Council Resolution 368 was adopted on April 17, 1975. The resolution addressed the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, particularly focusing on the situation between Israel and its neighboring countries.

Background[edit | edit source]

The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) is one of the six principal organs of the United Nations (UN), charged with ensuring international peace and security, accepting new members to the United Nations, and approving any changes to the United Nations Charter. The UNSC has the authority to establish peacekeeping operations, enact international sanctions, and authorize military action.

Content of the Resolution[edit | edit source]

Resolution 368 called for the implementation of previous resolutions, particularly United Nations Security Council Resolution 338 and United Nations Security Council Resolution 242. These resolutions aimed to establish a just and lasting peace in the Middle East.

The resolution reaffirmed the need for:

  • The withdrawal of Israeli armed forces from territories occupied in the recent conflict.
  • The termination of all claims or states of belligerency.
  • Respect for and acknowledgment of the sovereignty, territorial integrity, and political independence of every state in the area and their right to live in peace within secure and recognized boundaries free from threats or acts of force.

Voting[edit | edit source]

The resolution was adopted with 13 votes in favor, none against, and two abstentions from China and Iraq.

Significance[edit | edit source]

Resolution 368 was part of a series of efforts by the UNSC to address the Arab-Israeli conflict and promote peace in the Middle East. It underscored the international community's commitment to a negotiated settlement and the importance of previous resolutions as a framework for peace.
