The state of South Dakota has been represented in the United States Congress by congressional delegations since it was admitted to the Union on November 2, 1889. South Dakota is currently represented by one member in the United States House of Representatives and two members in the United States Senate.

South Dakota is represented in the Senate by two senators. Senators serve six-year terms, with elections staggered so that approximately one-third of the Senate is up for election every two years.
