University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust, formerly known as Plymouth Hospitals NHS Trust, is an NHS hospital trust that operates Derriford Hospital, the Royal Eye Infirmary, and the Child Development Centre in Plymouth, Devon. It provides secondary health services in Plymouth and the surrounding areas.
The trust is one of six centres used by the Defence Medical Services.
Trust[edit | edit source]
The trust manages Derriford Hospital, the Royal Eye Infirmary since 2013, and Plymouth's Child Development Centre. It also oversees community midwifery services in Plymouth, runs clinics, and manages the Peninsula Radiology Academy.
Originally, the trust had planned to integrate with Livewell Southwest, a local social enterprise providing integrated health and social care services. However, this integration was cancelled due to legal issues.
In October 2018, the trust made the decision to move all non-urgent orthopaedic surgery to the nearby Peninsula Treatment Centre, operated by Care UK. This was done to free up space at Derriford Hospital during the winter months. In July 2021, the trust planned to bring high-complexity surgery back in-house, as many patients had been waiting for extended periods of time for orthopaedic treatment.
The trust does not have an alongside midwifery-led unit, as recommended by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE).
