The University of Chicago is a private research university located in Chicago, Illinois. Founded in 1890, the university is known for its rigorous academic programs and influential research contributions. The university's main campus is situated in the Hyde Park neighborhood, approximately eight miles south of downtown Chicago.

History[edit | edit source]

The University of Chicago was established by the American Baptist Education Society with a significant donation from oil magnate John D. Rockefeller. The university opened its doors in 1892, with William Rainey Harper serving as its first president. Harper's vision was to create an institution that combined the best elements of a liberal arts college and a research university.

In 1942, the university became the site of the first controlled nuclear reaction, led by physicist Enrico Fermi, under the stands of Stagg Field. This event marked the beginning of the Atomic Age.

The University of Chicago is organized into several divisions and schools, including the College, the Law School, the Booth School of Business, and the Pritzker School of Medicine. The university is renowned for its Chicago School of Economics and the Chicago School of Sociology.
