History

The University of Dar es Salaam was established in 1961, shortly after Tanzania gained its independence. Initially, it was a college of the University of London, operating as an overseas campus. In 1963, it became a constituent college of the University of East Africa, alongside Makerere University in Uganda and the University of Nairobi in Kenya. The university gained its autonomy in 1970, becoming the first university in Tanzania. Since then, UDSM has played a pivotal role in the development of higher education in Tanzania, expanding its academic offerings and research capabilities.
