University of KwaZulu-Natal
University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) is a public university located in the province of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. It was formed on January 1, 2004, as a result of the merger between the University of Natal and the University of Durban-Westville. The university is known for its strong research, high academic standards, and diverse student body. It has made significant contributions to various fields, including medicine, law, engineering, agriculture, and the arts.
History[edit | edit source]
The University of KwaZulu-Natal combines the rich histories of two previous universities: the University of Natal and the University of Durban-Westville. The University of Natal was established in 1910, making it one of the oldest universities in South Africa. The University of Durban-Westville was established in the 1960s as a university for Indian students under the apartheid regime. The merger that created UKZN aimed to unify and transform higher education in the region, promoting access, equity, and redress in line with South Africa's post-apartheid vision.
Campuses[edit | edit source]
UKZN is divided into five campuses, each with its own unique focus and character:
- Edgewood: Primarily focuses on education.
- Howard College: Located in Durban, known for its engineering, law, and humanities programs.
- Medical School: Also in Durban, it is a leading center for medical research and education in South Africa.
- Pietermaritzburg: Offers a wide range of programs including agriculture, science, and arts.
- Westville: Focuses on business, health sciences, and natural sciences.

The university is recognized for its research output and has several research institutes and centers of excellence. It is particularly noted for its contributions to HIV/AIDS research, agricultural sciences, and social sciences.
