University of Limpopo is a public university located in the Limpopo Province, South Africa. It was established on January 1, 2005, through the merger of the University of the North and the Medical University of Southern Africa (MEDUNSA). The University of Limpopo aims to provide high-quality education, conduct meaningful research, and engage with the community to address the challenges facing the region and the country at large.

The University of Limpopo was formed from the merger of two previous universities, the University of the North and MEDUNSA. The University of the North was established in 1959 under the apartheid regime, primarily serving black students. MEDUNSA, established in 1976, was focused on providing medical education to black students during apartheid. The merger was part of the South African government's plan to restructure higher education to better serve the post-apartheid era's needs.

The University of Limpopo operates on two main campuses:

  • Turfloop Campus: Located near Polokwane, this campus was originally the University of the North. It offers a wide range of programs across various faculties including Science and Agriculture, Humanities, Management and Law, and Health Sciences.
  • MEDUNSA Campus: Situated in Ga-Rankuwa, just outside Pretoria, this campus focuses on health sciences and is known for its medical school.
