The University of Louisiana at Lafayette (UL Lafayette or UL) is a public research university in Lafayette, Louisiana. It is the largest institution within the University of Louisiana System and the second largest university in the state of Louisiana.

The university was founded in 1898 as the Southwestern Louisiana Industrial Institute (SLII). It underwent several name changes, becoming the Southwestern Louisiana Institute (SLI) in 1921, the University of Southwestern Louisiana (USL) in 1960, and finally the University of Louisiana at Lafayette in 1999.

Academics[edit | edit source]

UL Lafayette offers a wide range of undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral programs. The university is known for its strong programs in engineering, computer science, nursing, and business administration. It is classified among "R2: Doctoral Universities – High research activity".

Campus[edit | edit source]

The main campus is located in the heart of Lafayette, Louisiana. It features a mix of historic and modern buildings, including the iconic Martin Hall and the Edith Garland Dupré Library. The campus is also home to the Cypress Lake, a unique swamp-like body of water that serves as a natural laboratory for students.

Athletics[edit | edit source]

The university's athletic teams are known as the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns. They compete in the Sun Belt Conference and have a strong tradition in sports such as football, basketball, baseball, and softball.

Student Life[edit | edit source]

UL Lafayette offers a vibrant student life with numerous student organizations, fraternities, and sororities. The university also hosts various cultural and social events throughout the year, including the annual Lagniappe Day and Homecoming Week.
