The University of Memphis (UofM, U of M) is a public university in Memphis, Tennessee. Founded in 1912, the university has an enrollment of more than 21,000 students. The university is a major research institution and is classified among "R1: Doctoral Universities – Very high research activity".

The University of Memphis was established in 1912 as the West Tennessee State Normal School. It underwent several name changes, becoming West Tennessee State Teachers College in 1925, Memphis State College in 1941, and Memphis State University in 1957. In 1994, it was renamed the University of Memphis.
Campus[edit | edit source]
The main campus is located in the East Memphis neighborhood of Memphis. The university also operates several satellite campuses, including the Lambuth Campus in Jackson and the Collierville Center.

The University of Memphis is known for its research initiatives and is home to several research centers and institutes, including the FedEx Institute of Technology, the Center for Earthquake Research and Information, and the Institute for Intelligent Systems.

The University of Memphis athletic teams are known as the Memphis Tigers. They compete in the American Athletic Conference (The American) and participate in various sports, including football, basketball, baseball, and soccer. The university's mascot is Pouncer.
