University of Pennsylvania (UPenn) is a private Ivy League research university located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States. Founded by Benjamin Franklin in 1740, it is one of the oldest institutions of higher education in the country.

The University of Pennsylvania was founded in 1740 by Benjamin Franklin, a prominent inventor, statesman, and philosopher. Franklin's vision for the university was to create an institution that would educate leaders in commerce, government, and public service, similar to a modern liberal arts curriculum.

The University of Pennsylvania's campus covers over 279 acres in a contiguous area of West Philadelphia's University City district. The campus is known for its architectural styles, which include Collegiate Gothic, Georgian, and modern.

UPenn has produced many notable alumni, including several U.S. Supreme Court Justices, numerous living billionaires, and many foreign heads of state.
