University of South Florida (USF) is a public research university located in Tampa, Florida, United States. It is a member institution of the State University System of Florida. Founded in 1956, USF is the fourth-largest public university in the state of Florida, with a total enrollment of over 50,000 students as of the 2022 academic year.

The University of South Florida was established in 1956 as the first independent state university conceived, planned, and built in the 20th century. The university opened its doors in 1960 to 2,000 students in temporary quarters in north Tampa. The institution was named "South Florida" because, at the time of its founding, it was the southernmost university in the state.

Campus[edit | edit source]

USF's main campus is located in Tampa, with additional campuses in St. Petersburg, Sarasota, and Lakeland. The Tampa campus covers over 1,900 acres of land and features a mix of modern and historic buildings. The campus is known for its lush landscaping and subtropical setting.

USF offers more than 180 undergraduate majors and degree programs at the graduate, specialist, and doctoral levels, including the doctor of medicine.
