Virender Singh Sangwan was born in India and pursued his medical education at Maharshi Dayanand University, where he completed his MBBS degree.
He further specialized in ophthalmology, obtaining his MS degree from the same university. Dr. Sangwan's interest in corneal diseases led him to pursue advanced training in the United States, where he honed his skills in corneal transplantation and ocular surface reconstruction.

Dr. Sangwan began his career at the L V Prasad Eye Institute (LVPEI) in Hyderabad, India, where he has been instrumental in advancing the institute's research and clinical capabilities. At LVPEI, he established the Srujana Center for Innovation, focusing on developing new treatments for eye diseases.
Contributions to ophthalmology[edit | edit source]
Dr. Sangwan is best known for his work on limbal stem cell transplantation, a procedure that has restored vision to patients with severe ocular surface disorders. His research has led to the development of the "Sangwan's technique," which involves the use of cultivated limbal stem cells to treat corneal blindness.
In addition to his work on stem cell therapy, Dr. Sangwan has contributed to the understanding and treatment of uveitis, a group of inflammatory diseases affecting the eye. His clinical expertise and research have improved the management of this condition, which can lead to vision loss if untreated.

Dr. Sangwan's contributions to medical science have been recognized with numerous awards. In 2006, he received the prestigious Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for Science and Technology in the medical sciences category.
