Vanceril

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Vanceril is a brand name for the drug beclomethasone dipropionate, a synthetic corticosteroid used primarily in the treatment of asthma and non-infectious rhinitis. It is also used to treat various other inflammatory and auto-immune conditions.

Pharmacology[edit | edit source]

Beclomethasone dipropionate is a prodrug that is metabolized to the active form, beclomethasone-17-monopropionate (17-BMP), following administration. It has potent anti-inflammatory and vasoconstrictive effects. It works by reducing inflammation and swelling in the airways, making it easier to breathe.

Uses[edit | edit source]

Vanceril is used to prevent and control symptoms (wheezing and shortness of breath) caused by asthma. This medication belongs to a class of drugs known as corticosteroids. It works directly in the lungs to make breathing easier by reducing the irritation and swelling of the airways.

Side Effects[edit | edit source]

Common side effects of Vanceril include dry/irritated throat, hoarseness, and coughing. More serious side effects include white patches on the tongue or in the mouth, or vision changes such as blurred vision.

Precautions[edit | edit source]

Before using Vanceril, patients should inform their doctor if they are allergic to it, or to other corticosteroids (e.g., prednisone), or if they have any other allergies. This product may contain inactive ingredients, which can cause allergic reactions or other problems.

Interactions[edit | edit source]

Drug interactions may change how medications work or increase the risk for serious side effects. Some products that may interact with Vanceril include aldesleukin, mifepristone, and drugs that can cause ulcers/bleeding (such as NSAIDs, aspirin, anticoagulants).
