Vapor–liquid separator
Vapor–liquid separator is a device used in various industrial applications to separate a vapor-liquid mixture. A vapor–liquid separator may also be referred to as a liquid-vapor separator, flash drum, or knock-out pot. The primary function of a vapor–liquid separator is to allow the separation of a mixture of a vapor (gas) and a liquid based on the principle of gravity separation. Such separators are crucial in processes where the removal of liquid droplets from a vapor stream is necessary, or conversely, when separating vapor from a liquid feed is required.
Design and Operation[edit | edit source]
The design of vapor–liquid separators varies depending on the specific requirements of the application, including the properties of the vapor and liquid, the volume of the mixture to be separated, and the degree of separation required. However, most separators operate on the same basic principle. The vapor-liquid mixture enters the separator, and due to a decrease in velocity, gravity causes the heavier liquid droplets to fall to the bottom of the separator. The separated liquid collects at the bottom and is removed from the separator, while the vapor exits the separator from the top.
There are several types of vapor–liquid separators, including:
- Horizontal separators: Typically used when there is a high volume of liquid to be separated from the vapor.
- Vertical separators: More suitable for applications where the liquid volume is relatively low compared to the vapor volume.
- Cyclonic separators: Use a centrifugal force, generated by a spinning motion, to separate the vapor and liquid.
