Velebit is the largest mountain range in Croatia, part of the Dinaric Alps. It stretches for about 145 kilometers along the coast of the Adriatic Sea, forming a natural barrier between the coastal region and the continental part of the country.

Geography[edit | edit source]

Velebit is located in the central part of Croatia, extending from the Vratnik Pass in the northwest to the Zrmanja River in the southeast. The range is characterized by its rugged terrain, with numerous peaks, the highest of which is Vaganski vrh at 1,757 meters. The mountain range is divided into several sections, including Northern Velebit, Central Velebit, and Southern Velebit.

The climate of Velebit varies significantly from the coastal to the continental side. The coastal side experiences a Mediterranean climate, with mild, wet winters and hot, dry summers.
