Velebit

Velebit is a mountain range located in Croatia, part of the Dinaric Alps. It is the largest mountain range in Croatia and is recognized as a significant biodiversity hotspot. The range is divided into two main parts: the Northern Velebit and the Southern Velebit.

Geography[edit | edit source]

The Velebit range extends approximately 145 kilometers from northwest to southeast. The western side of the range faces the Adriatic Sea, while the eastern side is bordered by the Lika region. The highest peak of the range is the Vaganski vrh, standing at 1,757 meters.

Flora and Fauna[edit | edit source]

Velebit is known for its rich flora and fauna. The range is home to a variety of plant species, some of which are endemic to the area. The fauna of Velebit includes several species of mammals, birds, reptiles, and insects.

Protected Areas[edit | edit source]

Parts of the Velebit range are protected under Croatian law. The Northern Velebit National Park and the Paklenica National Park are located in the range. In addition, the entire range is recognized as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.

Cultural Significance[edit | edit source]

Velebit has a significant place in Croatian culture and history. It is often mentioned in Croatian folklore and literature. The range is also a popular destination for hiking and mountaineering.
