Verduno Pelaverga

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Verduno Pelaverga is a red Italian wine grape variety that is grown in the Piedmont region of northwest Italy. The grape is primarily found in the commune of Verduno, located in the province of Cuneo, where it is used to produce the Denominazione di Origine Controllata (DOC) wine of the same name.

History[edit | edit source]

The origins of Verduno Pelaverga are not well documented, but it is believed to have been cultivated in the Piedmont region for several centuries. The grape variety was nearly extinct in the mid-20th century, but efforts by local winemakers in the 1970s and 1980s helped to revive its cultivation.

Viticulture and winemaking[edit | edit source]

Verduno Pelaverga is a late-ripening grape variety that requires a long growing season to fully develop its flavors. The grape is typically harvested in late September or early October. The wines produced from Verduno Pelaverga are typically light-bodied with high acidity and moderate tannins. They are known for their distinctive strawberry and pepper aromas.

Verduno Pelaverga DOC[edit | edit source]

The Verduno Pelaverga DOC was established in 1995 and covers the commune of Verduno and parts of the communes of La Morra and Roddi. The DOC regulations require that the wines be composed of at least 85% Verduno Pelaverga, with the remainder made up of other non-aromatic red grape varieties permitted in the Piedmont region.

Food pairing[edit | edit source]

Verduno Pelaverga wines are versatile and can be paired with a variety of dishes. They are particularly well-suited to pairing with Italian cuisine, including pasta dishes, risottos, and meats.
