Vernier scale is a precise measuring instrument used to improve the accuracy of an instrument by allowing fine adjustments or to measure a distance or angle with high precision. The Vernier scale is widely used in devices such as calipers, micrometers, and sextants, enabling measurements to be read more precisely than could be done by observing the position of one scale against another under a simple microscope view.

The Vernier scale was invented in 1631 by the French scientist Pierre Vernier (1580–1637). His invention was a significant improvement in the field of measurement and instrumentation, allowing for the first time the ability to make very precise measurements by providing a means to read between the lines of the main scale.

The design of a Vernier scale consists of a main scale and a sliding or movable Vernier scale.
