Veronica Guerin (5 July 1960 – 26 June 1996) was an Irish journalist who was murdered in 1996 by drug lords. She was known for her investigative work on Dublin's criminal underworld.

Veronica Guerin was born in Dublin, Ireland, on 5 July 1960. She attended Catholic University School and later studied accountancy at Trinity College Dublin. Before becoming a journalist, she worked in public relations and as an accountant.
Career[edit | edit source]
Guerin began her journalism career in 1990, working for the Sunday Business Post and later for the Sunday Independent. She quickly gained a reputation for her fearless reporting on Dublin's criminal underworld, focusing on drug trafficking and organized crime.
Investigative journalism[edit | edit source]
Guerin's work brought her into direct conflict with some of Ireland's most dangerous criminals. She received numerous death threats and was even shot in the leg in 1995. Despite these threats, she continued her investigations, determined to expose the criminal activities plaguing Dublin.

On 26 June 1996, Guerin was shot and killed while driving on the Naas dual carriageway near Dublin. Her murder shocked the nation and led to significant changes in Ireland's legal system, including the establishment of the Criminal Assets Bureau.

Veronica Guerin's death had a profound impact on Ireland. Her bravery and dedication to journalism were recognized posthumously with numerous awards. Her life and work have been the subject of books and films, including the 2003 movie Veronica Guerin starring Cate Blanchett.
