Veterinary Surgeon
A Veterinary Surgeon, also known as a Veterinarian, is a professional who practices veterinary medicine by treating diseases, disorders, and injuries in animals. This includes diagnosis, treatment, and aftercare of a wide range of conditions and illnesses in both domestic and wild animals.
Education and Training[edit | edit source]
Becoming a Veterinary Surgeon requires extensive education and training. This typically includes a bachelor's degree in a related field, followed by a four-year Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM or VMD) degree from an accredited college of veterinary medicine. After obtaining their degree, veterinarians must pass a national board examination, the North American Veterinary Licensing Examination (NAVLE), to become licensed to practice in the U.S.
Roles and Responsibilities[edit | edit source]
The primary role of a Veterinary Surgeon is to diagnose and treat illnesses and injuries in animals. This can involve performing surgery, prescribing medication, setting fractures, delivering babies, and euthanizing severely ill or injured animals. They also provide preventive care to healthy animals, including vaccinations and regular check-ups.
Specializations[edit | edit source]
Many Veterinary Surgeons choose to specialize in a particular area of veterinary medicine. These can include small animal practice, large animal practice, exotic animal practice, wildlife medicine, veterinary pathology, veterinary oncology, and veterinary orthopedics, among others.
Professional Associations[edit | edit source]
There are several professional associations for Veterinary Surgeons, including the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS), and the European Board of Veterinary Specialisation (EBVS).
