The Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center (VSMMC) is a government-owned hospital located in Cebu City, Philippines. It is a general tertiary medical center and teaching training facility owned by the Philippine Government. The hospital aims to provide accessible and affordable healthcare services to all, regardless of social status.
The hospital's history dates back to 1911 when it was known as Hospital del Sur. It was formally established on April 11, 1913, and granted legal status through Act 2725 on January 12, 1913. Initially, it had only 30 beds and was called Southern Islands Hospital.
Over the years, the bed capacity of VSMMC has been increased through various acts. On June 1, 1992, RA 7588 was approved, increasing the bed capacity from 150 to 400 beds. On June 22, 1998, Republic Act No. 8658 increased the capacity to 800 beds. The most recent increase was on April 26, 2016, under Republic Act No. 10770, which raised the bed capacity to 1200.
Currently, VSMMC is focused on developing specialty and subspecialty departments. These include General Surgery, Neuro Surgery, Uro-Surgery, Internal Medicine, Obstetrics-Gynecology, Orthopedics, Otorhinolaryngology, Ophthalmology, Anesthesiology, Pathology, Psychiatry, Radiology, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Emergency Medicine, Family Medicine and Pediatrics, Rehabilitation Medicine, Dental Services, and the National Voluntary Blood Services Program.
