VigiBase

VigiBase is the World Health Organization's (WHO) global database for adverse drug reactions (ADRs). It is managed by the Uppsala Monitoring Centre (UMC) in Sweden. VigiBase is the largest database of its kind in the world, containing over 20 million reports of suspected ADRs.

History

VigiBase was established in 1968, following the thalidomide disaster in the late 1950s and early 1960s. The database was created to collect and analyze reports of ADRs from around the world, with the aim of identifying potential safety issues with medicines.

Function

VigiBase collects reports of suspected ADRs from national pharmacovigilance centres in over 130 countries. These reports are then analyzed by the UMC to identify potential safety issues with medicines. The database is used by regulatory authorities, researchers, and healthcare professionals to monitor the safety of medicines and to make informed decisions about their use.

Access

Access to VigiBase is restricted to national pharmacovigilance centres and other authorized users. The UMC provides training and support to these users to help them make the most of the database.
