Villard Blanc
Villard Blanc is a white grape variety that is used in the production of wine. It was created by French viticulturist Jean-Louis Villard in the 20th century. The grape is a hybrid, a cross between two other grape varieties, Seyve Villard and Gouais Blanc.
History[edit | edit source]
Villard Blanc was developed in the mid-20th century by Jean-Louis Villard, a French viticulturist. He was seeking to create a grape variety that was resistant to certain diseases and pests, and that could thrive in the cooler climates of northern France. The result was Villard Blanc, a hybrid of Seyve Villard and Gouais Blanc.
Characteristics[edit | edit source]
Villard Blanc is a high-yielding grape variety that is resistant to many common vine diseases. It is known for its hardiness and ability to thrive in cooler climates. The grapes are typically harvested in late September or early October.
The wines produced from Villard Blanc are typically light to medium-bodied, with high acidity and moderate alcohol content. They often have flavors of green apple, pear, and citrus, with floral and mineral notes.
Viticulture[edit | edit source]
Villard Blanc is grown in several wine regions around the world, including parts of France, the United States, and Canada. In France, it is primarily grown in the Loire Valley and Alsace regions. In the United States, it is found in the Finger Lakes region of New York and the Willamette Valley in Oregon. In Canada, it is grown in the Niagara Peninsula and Okanagan Valley.
Wine Production[edit | edit source]
Villard Blanc is used to produce a variety of wines, including dry white wines, sparkling wines, and dessert wines. It is often blended with other grape varieties to add acidity and structure. In some regions, it is also used to produce ice wine, a type of dessert wine made from grapes that have been frozen while still on the vine.
