History[edit | edit source]

Vipava was first mentioned in written documents in 1067. In the Middle Ages, it developed into a market town with its own castle, which is depicted on the town's coat of arms. On 30 August 1905, the town was hit by a disastrous earthquake, which killed 12 people and caused severe damage.

Geography[edit | edit source]

Vipava is located in the upper part of the Vipava Valley, near the confluence of the Vipava and Hubelj rivers. It is surrounded by the steep slopes of the Nanos Plateau and the Trnovo Forest Plateau, which protect it from the cold Bora wind that blows down the valley.

The economy of Vipava is based on agriculture, particularly fruit, vegetable and grape growing. The town is known for its quality wines, especially the autochthonous Zelen and Pinela.

Culture[edit | edit source]

Vipava is the birthplace of the Slovenian impressionist painter Rihard Jakopič. The parish church in the town is dedicated to Saint Stephen and belongs to the Koper Diocese.
