Virusoid

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Virusoid is a type of RNA molecule that is not classified as a virus, but has similar characteristics. It is a subviral agent that is dependent on the host cell for replication. Virusoids are found in plants and are associated with certain types of plant diseases.

Structure and Replication[edit | edit source]

Virusoids are single-stranded, circular RNA molecules. They do not encode any proteins and are not encapsidated. The replication of virusoids is dependent on the presence of a helper virus, which provides the necessary replication machinery. The helper virus is usually a plant virus, such as the Sobemovirus or the Luteovirus.

Disease Association[edit | edit source]

Virusoids are associated with various plant diseases. For example, the Peach latent mosaic viroid (PLMVd) is associated with the peach latent mosaic disease. Similarly, the Potato spindle tuber viroid (PSTVd) is associated with the potato spindle tuber disease.

Classification[edit | edit source]

Virusoids are classified into two families: the Avsunviroidae and the Pospiviroidae. The Avsunviroidae family includes the Avocado sunblotch viroid (ASBVd), while the Pospiviroidae family includes the Potato spindle tuber viroid (PSTVd).
