Voorhees

Voorhees is a township located in Camden County, New Jersey, in the United States. Named after Foster McGowan Voorhees, the governor of New Jersey from 1899 to 1902, the township is known for its suburban setting and its proximity to the city of Philadelphia.

Voorhees was incorporated as a township by an act of the New Jersey Legislature on March 1, 1899, from portions of Waterford Township. The township was named for Foster McGowan Voorhees, the governor of New Jersey who authorized its creation.

Geography[edit | edit source]

Voorhees is located in the southern part of Camden County, bordered by the townships of Cherry Hill, Evesham, Berlin, and Gibbsboro. The township covers a total area of 11.6 square miles, of which 11.5 square miles is land and 0.1 square miles is water.

Demographics[edit | edit source]

As of the 2010 United States Census, there were 29,131 people, 11,470 households, and 7,433 families residing in the township. The population density was 2,534.8 per square mile. The racial makeup of the township was 71.34% White, 10.42% African American, 0.14% Native American, 15.42% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.86% from other races, and 1.80% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.47% of the population.

Voorhees is served by the Voorhees Township Public Schools for pre-kindergarten through eighth grade, and by the Eastern Camden County Regional High School District for ninth through twelfth grades.

Notable people[edit | edit source]

Several notable individuals have hailed from Voorhees, including Carli Lloyd, a professional soccer player and two-time Olympic gold medalist, and Auston Matthews, a professional ice hockey player for the Toronto Maple Leafs.
