Waddingtons[edit | edit source]

Waddingtons is a British game and puzzle company that was founded in 1922. It has a rich history and has been responsible for creating many popular board games and card games that have entertained generations of people.

History[edit | edit source]

Waddingtons was established by John Waddington and Wilson Barratt as a printing company in Leeds, England. However, they soon ventured into the world of games and puzzles, and in 1935, they released their first board game called "Lexicon." This game was a huge success and marked the beginning of Waddingtons' journey into the gaming industry.

Over the years, Waddingtons continued to innovate and release new games. In 1949, they introduced "Cluedo," a murder mystery board game that has become a classic. Another popular game released by Waddingtons is "Monopoly," which they started producing in the UK in 1935 under license from Parker Brothers.

Notable Games[edit | edit source]

Waddingtons has created numerous notable games that have become household names. Some of these include:

  • Cluedo: A murder mystery game where players have to solve a crime by deducing the murderer, weapon, and location.
  • Monopoly: A classic real estate trading game where players buy, sell, and develop properties to become the wealthiest player.
  • Risk: A strategy game where players compete to conquer territories and eliminate opponents.
  • Pictionary: A drawing and guessing game that challenges players to communicate through sketches.
  • Trivial Pursuit: A trivia game that tests players' knowledge in various categories.

These games have not only provided entertainment but have also brought people together and created lasting memories.

Legacy[edit | edit source]

Waddingtons' contribution to the gaming industry is significant. Their games have become cultural icons and have been enjoyed by millions of people worldwide. The company's commitment to quality and innovation has earned them a loyal following.

In 1994, Waddingtons was acquired by Hasbro, a multinational toy and board game company. Although the Waddingtons brand is no longer active, many of their games continue to be produced and enjoyed under the Hasbro umbrella.
