Waffle Iron

A Waffle iron is a cooking appliance used to make waffles. It consists of two hinged metal plates, molded to create the honeycomb pattern found on waffles. The iron is heated and batter is poured between the plates, which are then closed to bake the waffle.

History[edit | edit source]

The waffle iron originated in the Low Countries around the 14th century. These early versions were constructed of two hinged iron plates connected to two long, wooden handles. The plates were often made to imprint elaborate patterns on the waffle, including coat of arms, landscapes, or religious symbols. The waffles would be baked over the hearth fire.

In the 19th century, the design of the waffle iron evolved and the use of cast iron for the plates allowed for greater uniform heat distribution. In the United States, Cornelius Swartwout patented the first US waffle iron in 1869. In the 20th century, the waffle iron became a standard fixture in many kitchens, with electric models becoming popular.

Types of Waffle Irons[edit | edit source]

There are several types of waffle irons. Traditional waffle irons are attached to tongs with wooden handles and are made to cook waffles over stove or open fire. Modern waffle irons are typically electric and have a non-stick coating. Some modern versions offer adjustable heat settings, timers, and non-stick surfaces.

Use[edit | edit source]

To use a waffle iron, one simply heats the iron, applies a small amount of batter on the patterned side of the open iron, and closes it. The batter is cooked between the two hot plates, which are often coated with a non-stick material. The result is a waffle that can be served in a variety of ways: with syrup, fruit, or other toppings.
