Whippet is a dog breed of medium size. They are a sighthound breed that originated in England, where they descended from greyhounds. Whippets are known for their unique physical characteristics, including a slim, aerodynamic build, which allows them to reach high speeds. They are considered the fastest domesticated animal of their weight, capable of speeds up to 35 mph (56 km/h). The breed is characterized by its friendly and gentle nature, making them popular pets.

History

The Whippet's history can be traced back to the late 18th century in England. They were initially bred by miners in Northern England for the purpose of rabbit coursing and racing. The breed was developed by crossing greyhounds with smaller terriers and, later on, Italian Greyhounds, to create a smaller, more versatile sighthound. The name "Whippet" is believed to derive from an old English word meaning "to move briskly". Whippets were officially recognized as a breed by The Kennel Club in 1891.

Description

Whippets have a distinct appearance, marked by their streamlined bodies, long legs, and narrow, pointed heads. Their coats are short and smooth, requiring minimal grooming. They come in a variety of colors and patterns. Adult Whippets stand 18 to 22 inches (46 to 56 cm) tall at the shoulder and weigh 25 to 40 pounds (11 to 18 kg).

Whippets are known for their affectionate and gentle demeanor. They are highly adaptable and can thrive in various living conditions, making them suitable for both city and country living.
