White Frog
The White Frog (Leptodactylus albilabris), also known as the White-lipped Frog, is a species of frog in the family Leptodactylidae. It is native to the Caribbean and parts of Central America. This species is notable for its distinctive white upper lip, which gives it its common name.
Description[edit | edit source]
The White Frog is a small to medium-sized amphibian, typically measuring between 3 to 5 centimeters in length. Its most distinguishing feature is the white stripe that runs along its upper lip. The dorsal surface is generally brown or gray, with darker spots or mottling that provides camouflage against the forest floor.
Habitat[edit | edit source]
White Frogs are commonly found in moist tropical and subtropical forests, often near streams or other bodies of water. They prefer habitats with abundant leaf litter and vegetation, which offer protection and ample feeding opportunities.
Behavior[edit | edit source]
White Frogs are primarily nocturnal, emerging at night to hunt for insects and other small invertebrates. During the day, they hide under leaves, logs, or in burrows to avoid predators and conserve moisture.
Reproduction[edit | edit source]
Breeding typically occurs during the rainy season. Males call to attract females, producing a distinctive "peep" sound. Females lay eggs in moist soil or shallow water, where they develop into tadpoles before metamorphosing into adult frogs.
Conservation Status[edit | edit source]
The White Frog is currently listed as Least Concern by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). While its population is stable, habitat destruction and pollution pose potential threats.
