Wiki markup

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Wiki markup, also known as wikitext or wikicode, is the syntax and keywords used to format content on wikis, including the popular MediaWiki software that powers Wikipedia. Wiki markup is designed to be easier to use than HTML, allowing users to create and edit pages with a simpler syntax.

Overview[edit | edit source]

Wiki markup is used to add elements such as links, formatted text, images, and tables to a wiki page. This markup language includes a variety of tags and syntax that can be used to manipulate the appearance and structure of webpage content on a wiki.

Syntax and Usage[edit | edit source]

The basic syntax of wiki markup includes:

 • Bold text: To make text bold, enclose it in three apostrophes, like this: Bold text.
 • Italic text: To italicize text, enclose it in two apostrophes, like this: Italic text.
 • Internal links: To link to another page within the same wiki, enclose the page title in double square brackets, like this: Page title.
 • External links: To link to a website outside the wiki, use a single square bracket with the URL followed by a space and the link text, like this: link text.
 • Headings: Headings are created by placing equal signs around the heading title. The number of equal signs indicates the level of the heading, with two equal signs for second-level headings, three for third-level, and so on, like this: ==Heading==.

Advanced Features[edit | edit source]

Wiki markup also supports more advanced features, including:

 • Templates: Reusable pieces of text that can be included in multiple pages, usually enclosed in double curly braces, like this: TemplateName.
 • Categories: To help organize articles, pages can be added to categories by including a category link at the bottom of the page, like this: .
 • Redirects: To redirect from one page to another, use the redirect command followed by the target page title, like this: #REDIRECT Target page.

Applications[edit | edit source]

Wiki markup is primarily used on wiki websites where users are encouraged to contribute and collaborate on content. It is particularly associated with the MediaWiki software, but other wiki systems may use similar or varying markup languages.
