William L. Higgins (March 8, 1867 – November 19, 1951) was an American politician and lawyer who served as a United States Representative from Connecticut. He was a member of the Republican Party.

Early life and education[edit | edit source]

William Lincoln Higgins was born in Chesterfield, Connecticut. He attended the public schools and later graduated from the Willimantic State Normal School in 1885. He then pursued higher education at the Wesleyan University, graduating in 1891. Higgins studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1893, commencing practice in Willimantic, Connecticut.

Political career[edit | edit source]

Higgins began his political career as a member of the Connecticut House of Representatives, serving from 1905 to 1907. He was then elected to the Connecticut State Senate, where he served from 1907 to 1909. His legislative work focused on education and public welfare.

In 1932, Higgins was elected as a United States Representative for Connecticut's 2nd congressional district. He served in the Seventy-third and Seventy-fourth Congresses from March 4, 1933, to January 3, 1937. During his tenure, he was known for his work on agricultural and labor issues.

Later life and death[edit | edit source]

After his congressional service, Higgins returned to his law practice in Willimantic. He remained active in community affairs and continued to be involved in local politics. William L. Higgins passed away on November 19, 1951, in Willimantic, Connecticut, and was interred in the Willimantic Cemetery.

Higgins is remembered for his contributions to Connecticut's legislative framework and his advocacy for education and public welfare. His work in Congress during the challenging years of the Great Depression left a lasting impact on his constituents.
