William Maurice, Prince of Nassau-Siegen
William Maurice, Prince of Nassau-Siegen (1604 – 1638) was a member of the House of Nassau, a prominent European noble family. He was the son of John VII, Count of Nassau-Siegen and Margaret of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg. William Maurice played a significant role in the military and political affairs of his time, particularly within the Holy Roman Empire.

William Maurice was born in 1604 in Siegen, a town in the County of Nassau-Siegen. He was the second son of John VII, Count of Nassau-Siegen, and Margaret of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg. His family was part of the larger House of Nassau, which had significant influence in the region.
Military Career[edit | edit source]
William Maurice followed in the footsteps of his father and older brother, John VIII, Count of Nassau-Siegen, by pursuing a military career. He served in various capacities within the armies of the Holy Roman Empire and was known for his strategic acumen and leadership skills.
Reign as Prince[edit | edit source]
In 1623, William Maurice succeeded his father as the Prince of Nassau-Siegen. His reign was marked by the turbulent events of the Thirty Years' War, a conflict that ravaged much of Europe. Despite the challenges, he managed to maintain the stability of his principality and protect his subjects from the worst effects of the war.
Personal Life[edit | edit source]
William Maurice married Ernestine Yolande de Ligne, a member of the noble House of Ligne, in 1629. The couple had several children, who continued the legacy of the House of Nassau-Siegen.
Death and Legacy[edit | edit source]
William Maurice died in 1638 at the age of 34. His death marked the end of a significant chapter in the history of Nassau-Siegen. He was succeeded by his son, John Maurice, Prince of Nassau-Siegen, who would go on to become a notable military leader and colonial administrator.
