Willingboro Township, New Jersey is a township located in Burlington County, in the U.S. state of New Jersey. Established in the 17th century and incorporated as a township on November 6, 1688, Willingboro is part of the Philadelphia metropolitan area and is a suburb of the city. The township has a rich history, evolving from an agricultural community into a prototype of the modern American suburb, particularly noted for its role in the development of planned communities in the 1950s and 1960s.

History[edit | edit source]

Willingboro was originally formed as Willingborough Township in the late 17th century, named after the town of Willingborough in England. Its early history was marked by agriculture, and it served as a rural farming area for centuries. In the 1950s, the township underwent a significant transformation when developer William Levitt purchased land and began constructing thousands of homes, creating one of the first planned communities in the United States, known as Levittown, New Jersey. This development was emblematic of the post-World War II suburban boom in the United States and marked a significant shift in the township's character and demographics.
