Windows Phone 8.1
Windows Phone 8.1 is a mobile operating system developed by Microsoft as the successor to Windows Phone 8. It was officially announced at the Build Conference in April 2014 and released to developers on April 14, 2014. The update was made available to all Windows Phone 8 devices.
Features[edit | edit source]
Windows Phone 8.1 introduced several new features and improvements over its predecessor:
Cortana[edit | edit source]
One of the most notable additions was Cortana, a virtual assistant similar to Apple's Siri and Google Now. Cortana can perform various tasks such as setting reminders, searching the web, and providing weather updates.
Action Center[edit | edit source]
The Action Center is a notification center that provides quick access to settings and notifications. Users can swipe down from the top of the screen to view notifications and toggle settings like Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and airplane mode.
Start Screen Customization[edit | edit source]
Windows Phone 8.1 allows for greater customization of the Start screen. Users can now add a third column of tiles and set a background image that appears behind the tiles.
Internet Explorer 11[edit | edit source]
The operating system includes Internet Explorer 11, which offers improved performance, better standards compliance, and new features such as InPrivate browsing and Reading Mode.
Word Flow Keyboard[edit | edit source]
The Word Flow keyboard introduced swipe typing, allowing users to type by sliding their finger from letter to letter without lifting it.
Universal Apps[edit | edit source]
Windows Phone 8.1 supports Universal Apps, which can run on both Windows Phone and Windows 8.1 devices, providing a more seamless experience across different types of devices.
Battery Saver[edit | edit source]
The Battery Saver feature helps extend battery life by limiting background activity and providing detailed information on battery usage.
Updates[edit | edit source]
Windows Phone 8.1 received several updates during its lifecycle, including the Update 1 and Update 2, which brought additional features and improvements.
End of Support[edit | edit source]
Microsoft ended support for Windows Phone 8.1 on July 11, 2017. Users were encouraged to upgrade to Windows 10 Mobile, the next iteration of Microsoft's mobile operating system.
