Winery

From WikiMD's Wellnesspedia

Winery is a building or property that produces wine, or a business involved in the production of wine, such as a wine company. Some wine companies own many wineries. Besides wine making equipment, larger wineries may also feature warehouses, bottling lines, laboratories, and large expanses of tanks known as tank farms. Wineries may have vineyard on premises, but they may also source their grapes from other vineyards.

History[edit | edit source]

The oldest winery is believed to be the 6,100-year-old Areni-1 winery in Armenia. Wine making technology improved considerably with the ancient Greeks but it wasn't until the end of the Roman Empire that cultivation techniques as we know them were common throughout Europe.

Modern wineries[edit | edit source]

In modern wine making, the second fermentation is often performed in the bottle. Other than the grape variety or varieties used, the process used to make the wine is the most important factor in defining the type, color, flavor, and texture of the wine.

Farm wineries[edit | edit source]

Farm wineries are a form of value added marketing, where the farm also becomes a winery. States such as New York have given a special permit to open a satellite store in a tourist area. With New York's three-tier system, they can sell their own products directly to the consumer.
