Winona Ryder


Winona Ryder (born Winona Laura Horowitz on October 29, 1971) is an American actress and film producer. She is one of the most successful and iconic actresses of the 1990s and has received numerous awards and nominations for her work in film.

Early Life[edit | edit source]

Ryder was born in Winona, Minnesota, and named after the town of her birth. Her parents, Cynthia Palmer (née Istas) and Michael Horowitz, were both involved in the counterculture of the 1960s. Ryder has one full sibling, a younger brother named Uri Horowitz, and two half-siblings from her mother's prior marriage.

Career[edit | edit source]

Ryder made her film debut in the 1986 film Lucas. In 1988, she starred in Beetlejuice, which was a critical and commercial success. Ryder gained widespread recognition with her role in the 1989 film Heathers, which has since become a cult classic.

In the 1990s, Ryder starred in a number of high-profile films, including Edward Scissorhands, The Age of Innocence, and Little Women. For her performances in The Age of Innocence and Little Women, Ryder received Academy Award nominations for Best Supporting Actress and Best Actress, respectively.

In the 2000s, Ryder continued to work in film, with notable roles in A Scanner Darkly, Star Trek, and Black Swan. Since 2016, she has starred in the Netflix series Stranger Things, for which she has received critical acclaim.

Ryder has been open about her experiences with anxiety and depression, and has been an advocate for mental health awareness. She has also been involved in various philanthropic activities, including work with the American Indian College Fund and Amnesty International.
