WirelessHART
WirelessHART is a wireless communication protocol designed for the process automation industry. It is an extension of the HART (Highway Addressable Remote Transducer) protocol, which is widely used for sending and receiving digital information between smart devices and control systems in the process industries.
Overview[edit | edit source]
WirelessHART was introduced in September 2007 by the HART Communication Foundation (now part of the FieldComm Group). It is designed to provide the same benefits as the wired HART protocol, such as interoperability and ease of use, while adding the advantages of wireless communication, including reduced installation costs and increased flexibility.
Technical Specifications[edit | edit source]
WirelessHART operates in the 2.4 GHz ISM band and uses IEEE 802.15.4 standard radios. It employs frequency hopping spread spectrum (FHSS) and time-division multiple access (TDMA) to ensure reliable and secure communication. The protocol supports mesh networking, allowing devices to relay messages for one another, which enhances network reliability and extends communication range.
Network Components[edit | edit source]
A typical WirelessHART network consists of the following components:
- Field Devices: These are the sensors and actuators that collect and transmit data.
- Gateways: These devices connect the wireless network to the plant automation system.
- Network Manager: This component is responsible for network configuration, scheduling, and management.
- Security Manager: Ensures the security of the network by managing encryption keys and authentication.
Applications[edit | edit source]
WirelessHART is used in various applications within the process industries, including:
Advantages[edit | edit source]
- Cost Savings: Reduces the need for wiring, which can be expensive and time-consuming to install.
- Flexibility: Easier to add or move devices within the network.
- Reliability: Mesh networking and frequency hopping enhance communication reliability.
- Scalability: Can easily scale to accommodate additional devices.
Security[edit | edit source]
WirelessHART incorporates several security features to protect data integrity and confidentiality, including:
