Wolfgang von Kempelen's Speaking Machine was an early attempt at speech synthesis by Wolfgang von Kempelen, a Hungarian author and inventor, known also for his construction of the Mechanical Turk, an automaton that purportedly could play chess. Kempelen's speaking machine, created in 1769, was designed to replicate the human voice and could simulate certain words and short phrases.

After the success and notoriety of the Mechanical Turk, Kempelen was motivated to explore other areas of interest, leading him to the study of acoustics and the mechanics of human speech. His fascination with these subjects culminated in the development of the speaking machine, which he worked on for several years.
