World Allergy Organization (WAO)

The World Allergy Organization (WAO) is an international umbrella organization whose members consist of regional and national allergy, asthma, and clinical immunology societies from around the world. By collaborating with its member societies, the WAO provides a wide range of educational programs, initiatives, and resources aimed at both healthcare professionals and the public to raise awareness, improve the diagnosis and treatment, and promote the understanding of allergic diseases and related immune system disorders.

History[edit | edit source]

The World Allergy Organization was established in 1951, initially as the International Association of Allergology and Clinical Immunology (IAACI). Over the decades, it has evolved in response to the growing global health impact of allergic diseases. In 2003, the organization adopted its current name to better reflect its global perspective and mission.

Mission[edit | edit source]

The mission of the WAO is to build a global alliance of allergy and clinical immunology societies to advance excellence in clinical care, research, education, and training. This is achieved through a variety of programs, including international scientific conferences, educational initiatives, and consensus statements on the management of allergic diseases.

Activities[edit | edit source]

The WAO organizes numerous activities aimed at fulfilling its mission:

  • World Allergy Week: An annual event that aims to raise awareness of allergic diseases and related disorders.
  • Educational Resources: The WAO offers a variety of resources for both healthcare professionals and patients, including online courses, webinars, and guidelines on the management of allergic conditions.
  • Scientific Journals: The organization publishes the World Allergy Organization Journal, a peer-reviewed journal that disseminates research and reviews on allergy, asthma, and clinical immunology.
  • International Scientific Conferences: The WAO hosts international conferences that provide forums for the exchange of the latest research and clinical practices in allergy and immunology.

Membership[edit | edit source]

Membership in the WAO is open to national and regional societies dedicated to allergy, asthma, and clinical immunology. Through its member societies, the WAO represents thousands of allergists and clinical immunologists worldwide.

Impact[edit | edit source]

The WAO plays a crucial role in addressing the global health challenges posed by allergic diseases, which are increasing in prevalence. By fostering international collaboration and education, the WAO contributes to the improvement of patient care and the advancement of research in the field of allergy and clinical immunology.
