World Fair Trade Organization

The World Fair Trade Organization (WFTO) is a global network of organizations representing the Fair trade movement. The WFTO's mission is to improve the livelihoods and well-being of disadvantaged producers by linking and promoting Fair trade organizations, and speaking out for greater justice in world trade.

History[edit | edit source]

The WFTO was established in 1989 and was originally known as the International Federation of Alternative Trade (IFAT). The organization was created to provide a global network for Fair trade organizations and to advocate for fairer trading conditions for marginalized producers. In 2009, IFAT was renamed the World Fair Trade Organization to better reflect its mission and scope.

Structure[edit | edit source]

The WFTO is a membership-based organization, comprising over 400 members from more than 70 countries. Members include Fair trade organizations, Fair trade networks, and Fair trade support organizations. The WFTO is governed by a Board of Directors elected by its members, and its day-to-day operations are managed by a Secretariat based in Culemborg, Netherlands.

Principles of Fair Trade[edit | edit source]

The WFTO has established ten principles of Fair trade that its members must adhere to:

1. Creating opportunities for economically disadvantaged producers 2. Transparency and accountability 3. Fair trading practices 4. Payment of a fair price 5. Ensuring no child labor and forced labor 6. Commitment to non-discrimination, gender equity, and women's economic empowerment 7. Ensuring good working conditions 8. Providing capacity building 9. Promoting Fair trade 10. Respect for the environment

Activities[edit | edit source]

The WFTO engages in a variety of activities to promote Fair trade and support its members. These activities include:

  • Advocacy and lobbying for fairer trade policies
  • Providing market access for Fair trade products
  • Capacity building and training for members
  • Certification and monitoring of Fair trade practices
  • Organizing events and campaigns to raise awareness about Fair trade

WFTO Guarantee System[edit | edit source]

The WFTO Guarantee System is a unique, international verification system that ensures the credibility of Fair trade organizations. It is based on the ten principles of Fair trade and includes a rigorous process of self-assessment, peer review, and external verification. Organizations that meet the requirements of the Guarantee System are awarded the WFTO label, which signifies their commitment to Fair trade principles.
