WormBase

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

WormBase is an online database that provides comprehensive information about the biology and genetics of the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans and related species. It is a collaborative project between researchers from various institutions around the world, including the California Institute of Technology, the Sanger Institute, and the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Overview[edit | edit source]

WormBase was established in 2000 as a repository for genetic and genomic data for the nematode C. elegans. Since then, it has expanded to include information on other nematodes, including C. briggsae, C. remanei, and C. brenneri. The database includes information on gene sequences, gene expression, gene interactions, and genetic and physical maps. It also provides tools for data analysis and visualization.

Content[edit | edit source]

The content of WormBase is divided into several sections:

  • Genomes: This section provides access to the complete genome sequences of several nematode species. It also includes tools for genome browsing and annotation.
  • Genes: This section provides detailed information about individual genes, including their sequences, functions, and interactions.
  • Phenotypes and Alleles: This section provides information about the phenotypic effects of different alleles.
  • Strains and Natural Variants: This section provides information about different strains and natural variants of nematodes.
  • Literature: This section provides access to the scientific literature related to nematode biology and genetics.

Usage[edit | edit source]

WormBase is used by researchers around the world to study the biology and genetics of nematodes. It is also used in education, as a resource for teaching genetics and genomics.
