History[edit | edit source]

The origins of the Worshipful Company of Bakers can be traced back to the 12th century, making it one of the oldest livery companies in the City of London. This was of particular importance during times when bread was a staple part of the diet for most Londoners.

Over the centuries, the Company has evolved, but it has always maintained a close relationship with the baking industry. It has been involved in various charitable activities, including the establishment of almshouses and the provision of pensions and support for members of the baking community in need.

Governance[edit | edit source]

The Company is governed by a Master, three Wardens, and a Court of Assistants, which includes past masters and other elected members. The governance structure is similar to that of other Livery Companies, reflecting traditions that have been in place for centuries.

Membership of the Worshipful Company of Bakers is open to professionals working in the baking industry and others who wish to support the aims and activities of the Company. Members can progress through the ranks of the Company by taking on roles and responsibilities, contributing to its governance and charitable work.
