XQuartz
XQuartz
XQuartz is an open-source version of the X.Org Server, a component of the X Window System that runs on macOS. It provides a graphical environment for running X11 applications on macOS, allowing users to run software that requires an X11 server.
History[edit | edit source]
XQuartz was originally developed by Apple Inc. as part of the X11.app package included with macOS. In 2013, Apple announced that it would no longer include X11 with macOS, and the development of XQuartz was taken over by the open-source community.
Features[edit | edit source]
XQuartz includes several key features:
- Support for X11 applications on macOS.
- Integration with the macOS Aqua interface.
- Support for OpenGL rendering.
- Compatibility with various X Window System toolkits, such as GTK and Qt.
Installation[edit | edit source]
XQuartz can be downloaded and installed from the official XQuartz website. After installation, users can run X11 applications by launching the XQuartz application, which provides an X11 environment on macOS.
Usage[edit | edit source]
Once installed, XQuartz allows users to run X11 applications either locally or remotely. Local applications can be started from the XQuartz terminal, while remote applications can be accessed using SSH with X11 forwarding enabled.
