History[edit | edit source]

Yahoo was created by Jerry Yang and David Filo while they were graduate students at Stanford University. Initially, it was a directory of other websites, organized in a hierarchy, as opposed to a searchable index of pages. The website, which was originally called "Jerry and David's Guide to the World Wide Web," was renamed "Yahoo!" in April 1994.

Services[edit | edit source]

Yahoo provides a variety of services, including a web portal, a search engine (Yahoo Search), Yahoo Mail, Yahoo News, Yahoo Finance, Yahoo Sports, and Yahoo Answers. Yahoo also offers advertising services, including Yahoo Native and Yahoo Gemini.

Yahoo Search[edit | edit source]

Yahoo Search is a web search engine that was originally powered by its own technology. In 2009, Yahoo signed a deal with Microsoft to have its search engine powered by Bing.

Yahoo News[edit | edit source]

Yahoo News aggregates news from various sources and provides users with the latest headlines and stories in various categories, including politics, entertainment, sports, and technology.

Yahoo Finance is a media property that provides financial news, data, and commentary including stock quotes, press releases, financial reports, and original content.

Acquisitions[edit | edit source]

Yahoo has acquired numerous companies over the years to expand its services and capabilities. Some notable acquisitions include Flickr, Tumblr, and Polyvore.

Decline and Sale[edit | edit source]

Despite its early success, Yahoo struggled to compete with newer companies like Google and Facebook. In 2017, Verizon Communications acquired Yahoo's core internet business for $4.48 billion. The remaining parts of Yahoo were renamed Altaba.
