Yamhill-Carlton AVA[edit | edit source]
The Yamhill-Carlton AVA is an American Viticultural Area located in Yamhill County, Oregon. It is recognized for its distinctive wine production, particularly Pinot Noir, due to its unique soil composition and climate conditions.
Geography[edit | edit source]
The Yamhill-Carlton AVA is situated in the northern part of Oregon's Willamette Valley. It is bordered by the Coast Range to the west, the Chehalem Mountains to the north, and the Dundee Hills to the east. The AVA is named after the two hamlets of Yamhill and Carlton, which are located within its boundaries.
Climate[edit | edit source]
The climate of the Yamhill-Carlton AVA is characterized by warm, dry summers and mild, wet winters. The Coast Range protects the area from heavy rainfall and extreme temperatures, creating a microclimate that is ideal for viticulture.
Viticulture[edit | edit source]
The Yamhill-Carlton AVA is renowned for its production of Pinot Noir. The region's ancient marine sedimentary soils, combined with its cool climate, allow for the production of wines with a deep fruit flavor and a strong mineral backbone. Other grape varieties grown in the area include Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, and Riesling.
Wineries[edit | edit source]
There are numerous wineries located within the Yamhill-Carlton AVA, each contributing to the region's reputation for high-quality wine production. Some of the most notable include the Belle Pente Vineyard and Winery, the Carlton Winemakers Studio, and the Shea Wine Cellars.
