Yaoundé is the capital city of Cameroon, located in the central part of the country. It is the second-largest city in Cameroon, after Douala, and serves as the political and administrative center of the nation. The city is situated on a hilly terrain and is known for its lush greenery and vibrant cultural scene.

History[edit | edit source]

Yaoundé was founded in 1888 by German explorers as a trading post and a base for ivory and rubber trading. During the German colonization of Cameroon, the city served as a strategic location for the colonial administration. After World War I, Cameroon was divided between the French and the British, and Yaoundé became part of French Cameroon. It was designated as the capital of French Cameroon in 1922 and retained its status as the capital after Cameroon gained independence in 1960.

Geography[edit | edit source]

Yaoundé is located at an elevation of about 750 meters (2,500 feet) above sea level, which gives it a relatively mild climate compared to other parts of Cameroon. The city is characterized by its rolling hills and numerous small rivers and streams. The Mfoundi River is one of the main watercourses that flow through the city.

Economy[edit | edit source]

The economy of Yaoundé is diverse, with significant contributions from the public sector, trade, and services. As the political capital, it hosts numerous government offices, foreign embassies, and international organizations. The city also has a growing manufacturing sector, with industries producing goods such as textiles, food products, and construction materials.

Education[edit | edit source]

Yaoundé is home to several higher education institutions, including the prestigious University of Yaoundé, which is one of the largest universities in Cameroon. The city also hosts various research institutes and specialized schools, making it a hub for academic and scientific activities in the region.

Culture[edit | edit source]

The cultural scene in Yaoundé is vibrant, with numerous museums, theaters, and cultural centers. The National Museum of Cameroon is located in the city and showcases the rich cultural heritage of the country. Yaoundé also hosts several annual festivals and events that celebrate Cameroonian music, dance, and art.

Transportation[edit | edit source]

Yaoundé is served by the Yaoundé Nsimalen International Airport, which connects the city to various international destinations. The city has a network of roads and public transportation options, including buses and taxis, that facilitate movement within the city and to other parts of Cameroon.
