Yevgeniya Kolodko
Yevgeniya Kolodko (Russian: Евгения Колодко; born July 22, 1990) is a retired Russian shot putter who has competed at the highest levels of international athletics, including the Olympic Games. She is known for her achievements in the sport, including winning a silver medal at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, which was later upgraded to silver after the original winner was disqualified for doping violations. However, Kolodko herself was stripped of her Olympic medal in 2016 after re-tests of her samples from the 2012 Olympics tested positive for banned substances.
Career[edit | edit source]
Kolodko began her career in athletics at a young age, focusing on the shot put. She quickly rose through the ranks in Russian athletics, making a name for herself in junior competitions before moving on to senior levels. Her breakthrough came in 2010 when she won the silver medal at the European Athletics Championships, establishing her as a strong competitor on the European stage.
In 2012, Kolodko represented Russia at the London Olympics, where she initially won the bronze medal in the women's shot put event. Her performance was celebrated as a significant achievement for the Russian athletics team. However, the sports world was later rocked by doping scandals, and Kolodko was among the athletes implicated. In 2016, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) announced that re-analysis of samples from the 2012 Games had found Kolodko to have used performance-enhancing drugs. As a result, she was stripped of her Olympic medal.
Following the doping scandal, Kolodko faced a period of suspension from competition. She returned to compete in various events but never reached the same level of success as before her suspension. Her career has been overshadowed by the doping scandal, which has also sparked discussions about the prevalence of drug use in athletics and the measures taken to combat it.
Personal Life[edit | edit source]
Yevgeniya Kolodko was born in Neryungri, Sakha Republic, Russia. She has been relatively private about her personal life, focusing public attention on her athletic career. The doping scandal and its aftermath have had a significant impact on her personal and professional life, challenging her reputation and achievements in the sport of shot put.
Legacy[edit | edit source]
Despite the controversies surrounding her career, Kolodko's achievements in shot put remain notable. She has been part of a generation of Russian athletes who have faced intense scrutiny due to widespread doping allegations. Her case has contributed to ongoing debates about fairness, the future of athletics, and the effectiveness of anti-doping measures in sports.
