Youth

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Youth is the time of life when one is young, often meaning the time between childhood and adulthood (maturity). It is also defined as "the appearance, freshness, vigor, spirit, etc., characteristic of one who is young".[1] Its definitions of a specific age range varies, as youth is not defined chronologically as a stage that can be tied to specific age ranges; nor can its end point be linked to specific activities, such as taking unpaid work or having sexual relations.[2]

Youth is an experience that may shape an individual's level of dependency, which can be marked in various ways according to different cultural perspectives. Personal experience is marked by an individual's cultural norms or traditions, while a person's level of dependency means the extent to which they still rely on their family emotionally and economically.[3]

Youth in various cultures[edit | edit source]

In many societies around the world, adolescence is closely associated with youth. However, the start of youth varies from one culture to another. In some cultures, it is considered to begin at puberty. In others, it is associated with an age of religious responsibility. For example, in Jewish culture, a person is considered to be an adult after the celebration of the Bar or Bat Mitzvah, which usually occurs at the age of 13 or 12 for girls.[4]

Youth and education[edit | edit source]

Education is a key aspect of youth in many cultures. In most countries, education is compulsory up to a certain age, but the level of education attained by youth varies greatly worldwide. The United Nations has established an International Youth Day, which is celebrated on August 12 each year, to promote the role of young people as essential partners in change and to raise awareness of the challenges and problems facing the world's youth.[5]

Youth and employment[edit | edit source]

Youth unemployment rates tend to be higher than the adult rates in every country in the world. The International Labour Organization estimates there were 75.8 million unemployed youth globally in 2012.[6]
