The program features a looped video of a log burning in a fireplace, accompanied by a soundtrack of classic Christmas music. The Yule Log has become a holiday tradition for many viewers, providing a cozy and festive ambiance in homes without fireplaces.
History[edit | edit source]
The Yule Log was created by Fred M. Thrower, president and CEO of WPIX, a television station in New York City. The program first aired on December 24, 1966. Thrower conceived the idea as a gift to New Yorkers who lived in apartments without fireplaces. The original broadcast was a three-hour loop of a burning log filmed at Gracie Mansion, the official residence of the Mayor of New York City.
Format[edit | edit source]
The program typically features a continuous loop of a log burning in a fireplace, with a soundtrack of traditional Christmas carols and holiday music. The original footage was shot on 16mm film and has since been remastered in high definition. The Yule Log has been expanded to include various versions, such as a 4K resolution version and a version with a crackling fire sound effect.
Broadcast and Availability[edit | edit source]
The Yule Log has been broadcast annually on WPIX since its inception, with the exception of a brief hiatus from 1990 to 2000. During this period, the program was revived due to popular demand. The Yule Log has also been syndicated to other television stations across the United States and is available on various streaming platforms.
Cultural Impact[edit | edit source]
The Yule Log has become a beloved holiday tradition for many families. It has inspired similar programs on other television networks and streaming services. The program's simplicity and nostalgic charm have made it a staple of holiday programming.
