Zakariya
Zakariya (also spelled Zakaria or Zachariah) is a male given name of Arabic origin, meaning "God has remembered". It is the Arabic equivalent of the Hebrew name Zechariah.
Etymology[edit | edit source]
The name Zakariya is of Arabic origin and means "God has remembered". It is derived from the Hebrew name Zechariah, which is composed of two elements: "Zakar", meaning "to remember", and "Yah", a shortened form of "Yahweh", the Hebrew name for God. Thus, the name can be interpreted as "God remembers" or "remembrance of God".

There are many notable people with the name Zakariya, including:
- Zakariya al-Qazwini, a 13th-century Persian physician, astronomer, geographer, and proto-science fiction writer.
- Zakariya Khan Bahadur, a Mughal governor of Lahore from 1726 until his death in 1745.
- Zakariya Rashid Hassan al-Ashiri, a Bahraini journalist who died in police custody in 2011.
- Zakariya Paul Gerage, an American convicted for his role in the 2009 Little Rock recruiting office shooting.
In religion[edit | edit source]
In Islam, Zakariya is a prophet and the father of John the Baptist. He is mentioned by name in the Quran in Surah 19, Maryam, among others.
In Christianity, Zechariah is also a prophet and the father of John the Baptist. He is mentioned in the Gospel of Luke in the New Testament.
